Cattails (Typha latifolia and T. angustifolia) are iconic pond marginal plants that bring dramatic, natural character to any water feature. Their sword-like leaves and distinctive brown, sausage-shaped seedheads create a bold architectural statement at the water's edge that is instantly recognisable and endlessly appealing. This medium-sized variety is ideal for ponds where space is a consideration, providing strong vertical accent without overwhelming the planting scheme. Cattails thrive in shallow water at a depth of 5 to 30cm, are extremely hardy and low-maintenance, and provide valuable nesting material and food for birds and other wildlife.
